It’s so great to be a part of DC’s artistic evolution in the past several years. Several years ago, on the first date with my now husband, we walked by an art exhibit at an empty retail space on U Street. Being art lovers, we decided to walk in, and that’s where the relationship with No Kings Collective began. Throughout the years we’ve worked with Peter and Brandon on business projects with ArtJamz, but have also enjoyed their super fun and non-pretentious events around DC. A perfect combination of art, break dance, and events for the hip, No Kings has transformed numerous vacant spaces into creative realms while bringing street art to the public. You’ve definitively seen their work around the city – the mural outside Atlantic Plumbing, the interior or Riide, ArtJamz exterior… and many more.
Their current project, Beasts of England, is an installation by No Kings Collective co-founder Brandon Hill at Lab 1270. This installation is a modern day interpretation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Through the lens of a common farm, the classic examined nationality, ethnicity, poverty, elitism, heritage, culture, politics, equality, and housing. Following Beasts of England is the opening of Hustle 2.0 – a design-oriented showcase of typography, 2D works, multimedia, sculpture and prints from a community of local working artists featuring works of Kelly Towles, Tim Conlon, Andy Fernandez, Kate Warren, Miguel “M.I.G” Martinez, Typecase Industries, Superwaxx, and Ralston Yorrick. This installation airs on May 13th.
Embroidered bombers are so trendy right now, and I chose a style that would last a big longer throughout the season. Paired with a metallic pleated skirt, this look is inspired by Gucci’s collection, which has swooned the fashion crowd (including myself) since Alessandro Michele took reins. The choker is a DIY number, more details here.
I’ll be posting more outfit photos showcasing artworks at Beasts of England on @anchyi Instagram, so make sure to take a peek there! Thanks for reading!
