Happy official beginning of Summer! Today’s outfit features a vintage-inspired, granny-square crochet dress paired with actual vintage accessories. As a matter of fact, I believe my parents used to have a blanket in the 70’s that looked EXACTLY like this dress.
In the summer, I turn my preferred hard-edged, modern looks into softer boho vibes. I’m not exactly a boho girl, but at this time of the year I just want to feel like I’m on vacation. Summer for me is the feeling of careless freedom. I love a monochromatic palette, but this season is time to work in some bright colors! And what could be a better place to pretend to be on a coastal vacation than the Puglian-inspired Masseria?
In this blog I often talk about the changes happening to neighborhoods in the city, like this one on Union Market and this on North End Shaw. The setting of this post is in one of DC’s hottest restaurants, Masseria. I became familiar with Chef Nicholas Stefanelli‘s work at one of my favorite restaurants back in the day, Maestro, and have always enjoyed his creations ever since. Luckily, his newest venture is right in my neighborhood! Tucked away between warehouse markets in NoMa, you could easily miss the modern facade of this gorgeous Puglia-inspired restaurant if you’re not looking hard enough. You will immediately be taken in to the coastal European vibe as you enter through the iron gates into the garden. Unfortunately, it was pouring on the day of our shoot so we were not able to capture the beautiful garden. Can’t wait to come back again for another shoot.
In my pre-mommy days, I loved digging through vintage stores and Etsy.com for unique, one-of-a-kind treasures – where these boots and earrings were discovered. For vintage shopping, I usually prefer going to brick-and-mortar stores since fit, textiles and degree of wear can be inconsistent. But since I do most of my shopping online nowadays, Etsy is the way to go for the special vintage piece. Take dresses like this, for instance – a search for “granny square crochet dress” comes back with quite a few fun choices.
Hope you enjoyed today’s vintage inspiration. And if you’re in the area – why not check out Masseria? Have a wonderful week!
